Charles E. Bortz

Charles E. Bortz, born on January 15, 1933, passed away peacefully on July 20, 2026, surrounded by the warmth of familial love that truly defined his long and remarkable life.

To have known Charles was to have known extraordinary kindness expressed through ordinary moments. He had a remarkable gift for making people feel cared for, whether by preparing a meal, lending a helping hand, sharing what he knew, or quietly stepping in whenever someone needed him. Patient, gentle, and endlessly generous, he believed that love was best shown through actions rather than words. He found joy in teaching others the skills that had served him throughout his life, always taking the time to explain, encourage, and guide with unwavering patience.

Charles proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Navy, going on to exemplify the same unwavering commitment in every aspect of his life. In Reading, Pennsylvania, he found his calling at Bortz's Chocolate, where he worked for many years as a maintenance man. Whether he was troubleshooting a motor or repairing chocolate molds, he was ever the handy man—the one known for being able to fix anything and always tinkering with something. Those around him drew comfort from his capability, resourcefulness, and willingness to share his knowledge without pride or pretense.

Beyond his career, Charles’ hands were rarely idle. He discovered a deep joy and pride in wood carving, an art form at which he excelled and which stands as one of his proudest accomplishments. Each piece bore not only the marks of his tools, but the patience and creativity with which he approached life itself. His love for cooking and baking—a testament to the warmth and comfort he created in his home—meant that the delightful aromas from his kitchen and the stories shared over a meal will live on in the fondest memories of his loved ones.

Charles’s family was the very heart of his life. He is survived by his son, Leon Kowalski; daughter, Cynthia Strickler; step-daughter, Linda Stevenson; grandchildren Aaron Strickler, Rachel Gittler, Lauren Kowalski, and Samuel Kowalski; great-grandchildren Ellie Strickler, Grayson Strickler, and Beckham Gittler. He also leaves behind his brothers, Donald and Ray Bortz.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wives, Jean his first wife and his second Bessie Bortz, his brother, Arthur and his parents Charles and Mabel.

A viewing will be held for Charles on July 28, 2026, from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at Milkins Trymbiski Funeral Home, 4914 Kutztown Road, Temple, PA 19560, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM at the same location. Burial will take place at Good Shepherd United Church of Christ Cemetery, 170 Tuckerton Road, Reading, PA 19605, at 12:15 PM.

Charles never sought recognition for his generosity; he simply gave of himself because it was who he was. His life was defined not by grand gestures, but by countless meaningful acts of compassion that made family, friends, and neighbors feel welcomed, supported, and loved. The lessons he shared, the meals he served, and the care he offered so freely will continue to live on in the hearts and lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him. May we honor him by carrying forward his spirit of generosity and his immeasurable capacity for love.
