George W. Schlappich

November 24, 1921 — October 13, 2017

George W. Schlappich, 95, formerly of Bernville, passed away Friday, October 13th in Berks Heim.

George was born in Penn Twp., he was the son of the late Raymond & Carrie (Ohlinger) Schlappich.

George was a member of St. Thomas Church in Bernville.

George completed twelve years of schooling at the former Penn Bernville School, now Tulpehocken School District.

George served in the U. S. Army during WW II. He participated in the Normandy Invasion, the Siege of Bastogne, and the Battle of the Bulge.

George was employed by the former Berkshire Knitting Company ( VF Corp.) as a quality control inspector. He also was formerly employed by the Bon Ton Store and Penn Bernville School, both as a custodian.

George loved playing cards, traveling to the casinos, and going to the Leesport Market. He maintained a large vegetable garden at his home for many years.

George was a member of the Bernville American Legion, Post No. 732 where he had seventy two years of continuous service and was a member of Mt. Pleasant Fire Co.

George really enjoyed large family gatherings.

Surviving is a sister, Elsie A. Bare, widow of Irvin Bare of Bernville.

George is survived by many nieces and nephews.

There are five brothers and five sisters that predeceased George, they are
Chester, Hiester, Allen, Warren, Roy, Stella, Grace, Ellen, Ruth, and June.



George's family would like to express a special thank you for the staff of Berks Heim, especially Unit - A2, for all the love, care, and kindness they provided for George during his say at Berks Heim.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, October 17th at 10:30 am in the Kirkhoff Funeral Home, 206 N. Main St., Bernville with Rev. Dr. Daniel Lute officiating.

A viewing will be held on Tuesday morning from 9:30 am until time of service in the funeral home.

Interment will follow in Bern Cemetery where the Topton American Legion Post No. 217 will perform military honors for George.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bernville American Legion, P. O. Box 732, Bernville, PA 19506.
