James P. Sterganos

Aug 14, 1944 — Aug 15, 2026

James P. Sterganos, known affectionately as Jim, passed away in his home on August 15, 2026, with his loving wife by his side. Born on August 14, 1944, Jim’s journey through life was defined by dedication to family, professional achievement, and service to his community.

A proud son of Greek immigrants, Jim’s early years were marked by the significant transition of his family to the United States. This immigrant experience shaped much of his identity and aspirations, instilling in him a profound respect for opportunity and perseverance.

Jim’s educational pursuits took him from Muhlenberg College to the University of New Mexico. While there, Jim was an exchange student at the University of Mexico, Mexico City. He ultimately graduated from Tarkio College in Missouri, a milestone that laid the foundation for a remarkable professional career. In 1969, Jim joined the staff at Penn State Berks, originally intending to stay for only a few years. His commitment, however, led to a career spanning more than three decades. Over the years, Jim rose to become the Chief Operating Officer. His vision and leadership contributed significantly to the campus’s transformation, overseeing its growth from a one-building facility in Wyomissing to its current location along Tulpehocken Road, Spring Township. Jim served as a board member of NACAS East - National Association of College Auxiliary Services. He retired in 2007.

Beyond his formal career, Jim demonstrated an unwavering devotion to civic engagement and community betterment. He served as past President of the board of Planned Parenthood, participated on the board of the Reading Rotary, acted as Chairman of one of the allocation committees of the United Way of Berks County, and was co-owner of the Brighter Eatery which had 2 locations in downtown Reading. Additionally, as a former member of the Berks County Industrial Development Authority, Jim was instrumental in creating more than 3,000 jobs in the community—an accomplishment of which he was particularly proud.

Jim lived out his faith and cultural heritage as a dedicated member of Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, serving as Financial Secretary and Treasurer. His breadth of interests extended well beyond his professional and civic responsibilities. He was an enthusiastic traveler who explored the wonders of the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Europe, as well as the Galapagos, Amazon Rainforest, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, French Polynesia, Iceland, China, and Tibet. Jim was also an accomplished alpine skier, spending two years as an instructor in the Hazleton area. He found joy in hiking, notably at Nolde Forest, and adventured down the South Kaibab Trail at the Grand Canyon before embarking on a five-day rafting trip on the Colorado River. He was also an avid fisherman, preferring fly-fishing, deep-sea fishing, and surf fishing. He loved photography and was always eager to learn. Jim graduated from the Annapolis Sailing School in 1985 and enjoyed sailing throughout his life.

Jim was the beloved husband of Christine A. Sterganos, with whom he shared a deep and enduring partnership. He was the devoted father of Nicholas Sterganos and daughter-in-law Ellyn. His legacy also continues through his cherished grandchildren: Elizabeth, Jack, and Alexander. Jim is survived by his brother, Gus N. Sterganos.

He was preceded in death by his father, Nicholas Sterganos, and mother, Athens (Manuel) Sterganos, whose influence and memory he honored throughout his life.
