Jean C. Wetzel, a beloved member of the community, passed away on July 15, 2024 at the age of 97 in Leesport. She was born on July 27, 1926, in Barry Township. Jean led a remarkable life full of dedication, resilience, and love that touched the hearts of all who knew her.
Having graduated from the former Ashland High School in 1943, Jean embarked on a fulfilling journey that saw her contribute significantly during the trying times of World War II. She worked a Secretary at Cramps Shipyard in Philadelphia and later in Lewisburg, PA. Despite the challenges of war, Jean's work ethic and positive spirit shone through as she supported the war effort with unwavering dedication.
Jean's adventurous spirit was evident in her marriage to her childhood sweetheart, John M. Wetzel. Their union lasted for 58 wonderful years until John's passing on March 1, 2003. Together, they navigated life's ups and downs with grace and strength.
With John's career leading them to relocate 13 times due to his work at the Reading Railroad, Jean embraced each new chapter with optimism and resilience. Her ability to adapt to change and create a warm home wherever they went was truly commendable.
Jean's proudest accomplishment lay in her deep faith and commitment to West Lawn United Methodist Church. For decades, she dedicated herself to serving the church community and was an integral part of the prayer chain. Her steadfast faith and kind-hearted nature left an indelible mark on all those who had the privilege of knowing her.
Jean is survived by her loving daughters Janet Frey and Joyce Sipe, wife of Carl with whom she resided. Her grandsons Christopher Snyder and Bryon J. Sipe. Additionally, she leaves behind several great-grandchildren and great-grandson Dylan Stitzer, many nieces, nephews, friends, and all those who were fortunate enough to be part of her life.
A viewing will be held on Monday, July 22, 2024 at West Lawn United Methodist Church located at 15 Woodside Ave West Lawn, PA starting from 10:00 am - 11:00 am with a memorial service beginning at 11:00 am at church. Burial will be held privately at the request of the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Jean's name may be sent to West Lawn UMC Firehouse Youth Ministries for their missions or any other needs,15 Woodside Ave, Reading, PA 19609. "They are our future!"
