Joseph C. Buda

Joseph Carmel Buda, 87, organizer of several youth sports programs and athletic clubs, died December 25, 2015, at Manor Care in Laureldale. He is formerly of Ontelaunee Township

Joe was born in Temple, PA on February 17, 1928. He was the son of the late Carmel & Loretta (Frick) Buda.

He was predeceased by his wife Barbara A. (Hiester) Buda who died April 10, 2013 and brother Anthony on December 31, 2003. Joe is survived by his daughter, Deborah A., wife of Kent D. Morey, granddaughter, Christie M. Coleman of Fleetwood, brother, Andrew husband of Jean Buda of Allentown, sister, Charlotte "Patty" Yeager of Temple. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Joe was a member of Bern Reformed United Church of Christ in Leesport, PA.

He was a member of the Schuylkill Valley School Board and Berks County Intermediate Unit for twenty-four years receiving many honors and awards over the years for his extraordinary service.

Joe had been a major influence in area youth sports programs for many years, aiding in the creation and development of the Temple Boys PAL baseball team in the late 1950s.

He was a founder of the Temple Youth Organization in the late 1950s, which led to the formation of several boys baseball teams in Temple.

Joe was a baseball coach for the American Legion team in Temple.

He was a member and sponsor of the Reading Hot Stovers for many years and also was a major influence in forming the Berylco Athletic Association.

Joe was a United States Army veteran serving in World War II in Yokohama, Japan.

He was employed as a metal worker for more than 45 years by Kawecki-Berylco Industries Inc., later NGK Metals Corp., of Muhlenberg Township.

"Chef" Joe loved baking his famous apple and pumpkin pies. He was also in charge of the yearly Valentine's Day spaghetti and meatball dinner at BCIU.

Joe was a exceptional musician playing both the clarinet and saxophone in a band during his younger years and later enjoyed listening to Big Band music.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 30th at 7 pm in the Milkins Giles Funeral Home, Inc., 4914 Kutztown Rd., Temple with Pastor Paul Cronin officiating.

A viewing will be held one hour prior to the service in the funeral home.

Interment will be private.
