MelvinM. Moyer

June 9, 1944 — June 3, 2017

Melvin M. Moyer, 72, of Reading, PA died Saturday, June 3, 2017 at St. Joseph's Medical Center. Born on June 9, 1944, he was a son of the late John F. and Helen M. (Steffy) Moyer. Married for 53 years, he was the devoted husband of Sandra Jean (Youse) Moyer. Melvin worked as a safety inspector for the Reading Railroad for over 10-years. After his railroad employment, he was a maintenance fabricator for several local businesses. Melvin was a jack-of-all-trades, a trait he passed on to his sons. A farmer at heart, Melvin grew and sold sweetcorn and various other small crops. He farmed up to 100 acres in land patches he'd rent throughout the county. He loved tinkering with and rebuilding his antique International Cub Cadet garden tractors. Melvin also enjoyed working on cars and he was an avid Dale Earnhardt racing fan. Better known as 'Pop Pop' to his great granddaughter, he and Athena had a very special relationship; she was his pride and joy. In addition to his wife, Melvin is survived by two sons, John M. Moyer of Exeter and his companion Colleen L. Schwartz of Wyomissing and Thomas L. Moyer and his fiancee Nancy E. Ludwig of Dauberville. He is also survived by one grandson, John M. Moyer, Jr. of Reading and one great granddaughter, Athena M. Moyer. In addition to his parents, Melvin is predeceased by two brothers. Services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Milkins Giles Funeral Home, Inc. of Temple, PA has been entrusted with the arrangements. Condolences and messages may be placed online at www.milkinsgilesfuneralhome.com.
