Norman T. Ernst, a beloved father, husband, and devoted friend, passed away on May 29, 2025, at his residence, surrounded by his loving family. Born on August 16, 1932, in Hamburg, Norman lived a life marked by dedication, kindness, and an infectious sense of humor that brightened the lives of those around him.
For 52 years, Norman proudly served as a Carpenter, working under the Int. Brotherhood Carpenters Union 492 until his well-earned retirement in 1994. After his retirement, Norman spent his winters in Florida where he made many friends. He was a man of extraordinary skill and practicality; as family and friends often remarked, there was nothing he could not fix. This talent extended beyond the tools; he was a master of laughter, a practical jokester with a heartwarming ability to make others smile.
A proud veteran of the United States Army, Norman carried with him a sense of honor and commitment that influenced every aspect of his life. He was a life member of the American Legion—Carl Anspach Post—where he remained an active participant in community affairs, all the while embracing his role as a former councilman at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Reading.
Norman’s passion for life knew no bounds. A true sports enthusiast, he was particularly fond of baseball, and his loyalty was forever pledged to the Phillies. In his earlier years, he was known to play on the fast-pitch softball field, playing for various teams, including Ernst Inc., St. Luke's, and Riverside. Norman’s love for life also included roller skating, where he and his beloved wife, Barbara A. (Long) Ernst, first met.
Family was the core of Norman's existence. He is survived by his cherished wife, Barbara, and their three children: Timothy W. Ernst, husband of Chris A.; Thomas A. Ernst, husband of Barbara A.; and Kelly A. Smorey, wife of Kip. The legacy of his kindness will continue through his seven grandchildren: Chad Ernst, Cherie Gardner, Nathan Ernst, Caleb Smorey, Natalie Ernst, Colin Ernst, and Amelia Ernst; Three step-grandchildren, Andrew Smorey, Tara Conrad, and Brandi Smorey, and three great-grandchildren: Colby Ernst, Carter Ernst, and Calvin Gardner. Also remaining to honor his memory are his brothers Leroy, Bruce, Ernie, and John Ernst, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Norman was predeceased by his parents, Claude and Violet (Fichthorn) Ernst; his daughter, Tammy Lynn Ernst; and his siblings—George Ernst, Richard Ernst, David Ernst, Gloria Schlegel, Patricia Iovanna, Betty Jane Ernst, Joann Ernst, Claude Jr., Claude Jr., and Lucy Ernst—who have gone before him.
As we reflect upon the life of Norman T. Ernst, we remember a kind, caring, and loving individual who left a lasting imprint in the hearts of those he met. His profound ability to connect with others, along with his unwavering support for family, will resonate in the many stories and cherished memories shared throughout the years. His presence will be deeply missed but fondly remembered.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to Brandi, Chrissy, Nancy, and Shannon—your dedication as visiting nurses has made a lasting impact. Your kindness, professionalism, and compassion have brought comfort during a challenging time, they are truly grateful for everything you do.
