Paul L. Schell, “Pap Pap”, 94, of Bern Township, passed away peacefully in his home on Wednesday, October 4, 2023, with his sons, Dennis and Scott, by his side.

Born in Nuremberg, PA, on September 28, 1929, he was the son of Lloyd and Dartha (Nause) Schell. Paul was the husband of the late Jessie (Keagel) Schell with whom he shared 64 years of marriage at her time of passing in 2014.

Paul proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Paul and Jessie moved to Reading from Harrisburg in 1953 where they opened Schell’s Drive-In and Miniature Golf.  

He had many interests and talents which he enjoyed during his life. He was an avid golfer and model train enthusiast. Paul also designed and built various miniature golf courses in the area, but his true passion was horses. He owned, trained, and raced harness horses, owning his own stable for many years. He was a member of Park Road Presbyterian Church (Formerly First Presbyterian Church of Reading) for 61 years.

Paul had an outgoing personality, easily making friends wherever he went. He loved to tell jokes and entertained everyone around him. Paul will be sadly missed by his two sons, Dennis Schell, husband of Marcia, and Scott Schell, husband of Laura, both of Bern Township. He also leaves behind four grandchildren, Blake Schell, Andrew Schell (Mia), Ashely Jessen (Brian), and Kaitlin Walls (Kevin). Paul was blessed with seven great-grandchildren who adored their Great Pap Pap and he adored them: Harrison Jessen, Wyatt Jessen, Maverick Jessen, Julia Schell, Claire Schell, Nolan Schell, and Axel Schell.

A celebration of Paul’s life will be held on Saturday, October 21, 2023 at Park Road Presbyterian Church, 1045 N. Park Road, Wyomissing, at 11:00 am. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 10:15 am until the time of service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Paul’s name may be made to a charity of your choice.
