Reverend Herman M Lutz

Reverend Herman M. Lutz, 98, died Monday morning, August 6, 2018, at Phoebe Berks, South Heidelberg Township, where he had been a resident since 1999.

He was predeceased by his wife Jennie M. (Lutz) Lutz, who died September 13, 2007.
Born in Jefferson Township, he was the son of the late William I. and Elsie C. (Zerbe) Lutz.
Surviving are a daughter Jeanne A. (wife of the Rev. Stephen Phillips), and a son David P. Lutz (partner of Anton Banczi), and three grandsons, three great grandsons, and one great granddaughter. He was predeceased in 2017 by a brother, William G. Lutz.

Reverend Lutz graduated in 1938 from the former Robesonia High School. In 1941 he graduated from the former Wyomissing Polytechnic Institute. He continued studies from the former Reading Bible Institute, graduating in 1960. In 1981 he simultaneously graduated from Elizabethtown College and the Lancaster Theological Seminary by completing a six-year course of study.

During World War II he served his country in the United States Army.

Reverend Lutz began working as a mechanical and manufacturing engineer for thirty-five years at the former Textile Machine Works, now known as Rockwell International of Wyomissing.

He began his ministry at St. John's (Hain's) UCC Church, Wernersville, as director of Christian education from 1976 until 1981. He continued in this parish as associate pastor, from 1981 thru 1984.

He then became pastor of St. Luke's UCC, Shoemakersville, from 1985 thru 1987.
In 1988 he became pastor of First Reformed Church, Wernersville, serving there until 1993.
Reverend Lutz continued as supply pastor of Christ Little Tulpehocken Church, Bernville, between 1994 to 1996.
In 1999, he completed his career as an interim pastor of St. Thomas Church, Bernville.

For the 275th anniversary of Christ Little Tulpehocken Church, Reverend Lutz wrote a book which is registered in the Library of Congress.

Friends may call at the Kirkhoff Funeral Home, Bernville, on Sunday, August 12, from 6 - 8 p.m. and at Christ Little Tulpehocken Church on Monday, August 13, one hour before the 11:00 a.m. funeral service, with Pastor James Snyder and Herman's son-in-law officiating. Interment follows in the church cemetery.

Contributions in Reverend Lutz's memory may be given to Christ Little Tulpehocken Church, 40 Church Rd., Bernville, PA 19506.
