Richard S. Bender

Richard S. Bender, 92, formerly of Mt. Pleasant and the Danken House in Wernersville, passed away Sunday June 9th in Manor Care Health Services, Spring Twp.

Born in Penn Twp., he was the son of the late John B. Bender and Sallie F. (Schock) Bender.

He was employed by Caron Mills in Robesonia for twenty eight years retiring in 1985.
He was an active fireman for sixty seven years. He was a dedicated member of the Mt. Pleasant Fire Co., where he formerly served as Fire Chief for eighteen years, an assistant financial secretary for five years, and a trustee for four years.
He was a trustee for twenty five years for the Berks County Fire Chiefs Assoc.
He also was a member of Pioneer Hose Co. in Robesonia and a member of the Bernville Fire Co.
He served in the U. S. Army during WW II.
He was a member of the Schuylkill Valley Bible Chapter Church in Mohrsville.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda L., wife of Jessie Tibbs of Cicero, Indiana and Delphine L., wife of Rodney Magaro of Newmanstown.
There are four grandchildren, Christine Cowan, Nadine Mattern, and Brooke and Benjamin Barnett. Also, three great grandchildren, Jacob Cowan and Taylor and Cameron Mattern.
He was predeceased by a sister, Arlene J. Bender and two brothers, John S. and Frederick Bender.

Funeral services will be Saturday June 15th at 10:30 AM in the Kirkhoff Funeral Home, 206 N. Main St., Bernville with interment to follow in Bern Cemetery. Family and friends may attend a viewing on Saturday from 9 AM until time of service in the funeral home.
