Shirley A. Oswald, a dedicated nurse and beloved family matriarch, passed away peacefully on May 10, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. Born on April 20, 1934, Shirley's life was marked by compassion, service, and devotion to those she held dear.
After graduating from the Reading Hospital School of Nursing, Shirley embarked on a remarkable career in nursing, becoming a registered nurse. She devoted 41 years of her life to nursing. She most recently was employed by Berks Heim, where her exemplary skills and compassionate care earned her the esteemed position of Assistant Director of Nursing before her retirement in 1996. Her commitment to nursing touched countless lives and left an enduring legacy of professionalism and kindness.
Shirley’s passions extended beyond her career. She was an active member of the Senior Club of Laureldale and was renowned for her exceptional culinary talents as a cook and baker. Her home was a gathering place enriched by her holiday decorations, which she masterfully crafted year after year. She cherished spending quality time with her family, especially her grandchildren, embracing the joy and warmth of family life.
Her love of the outdoors was evident through her enjoyment of camping, frequently traveling with her camper to Lewis, Delaware, and summertime visits to the beach, where she found relaxation and happiness.
She is survived and lovingly remembered by her three daughters, Sherry Mann, Debra Beck, and Cynthia Ernesto, wife of Charles. Shirley's legacy continues through her six grandchildren—Benjamin Mann, Elizabeth Pittenger, Robert Senishen, Amanda Miller, Andrew Ernesto, and Sarah Krotulski—fifteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. She also leaves behind her brother, John F. Rarick, husband of Patti.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 66 years, Ernest L. Oswald, and her parents, John W. and Margaret (Stevens) Rarick.
A visitation in honor of Shirley’s life will be held on May 18, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Milkins Trymbiski Funeral Home, located at 4914 Kutztown Road, Temple, followed by a funeral service beginning at 11:00 am in the funeral home.
