Walter Stanley Shirey

Walter Stanley Shirey, 87, of Bernville, passed away on Saturday, August 5, 2023, at the Reading Hospital surrounded by his loving family.

Stanley was born on July 18, 1936, in Stoney Creek Mills and he was the son of the late Daniel A. and Sarah (Stanley) Shirey. He was the loving husband of Helen L. (Hollenbach) Shirey with whom he shared 64 years of marriage.

Stanley was a proud United States Army Veteran. He worked as a Carpenter and was employed by Carpenters Health and Welfare Union of Philadelphia for over 40 years until his retirement. While employed, Stanley helped to build the Limerick Powerplant and various local casinos. After his retirement, he was employed part-time by Carol’s Crew Painting for many years. Stanley was a long-time member of Zion Blue Mountain UCC. In his free time, he loved carving and even carved many pieces for his children. Stanley built the home that he lived in with his wife and children. He was an avid hunter and loved the Philadelphia Eagles, Phillies, and NASCAR.

In addition to his wife, Helen, Stanley is survived by his children, Robert A. Shirey, Bill M. Shirey, Robin LaSota and Sharon Naftzinger. Also surviving are grandchildren, Kayla, Cody, Aaron, Bradley and CJ; Great grandchildren, Aurora, Evelyn, Savannah, Chloe and one more great-grandchild on the way.

Stanley was the youngest of five siblings and was predeceased by all of his brothers and sisters.

A visitation will be held Tuesday from 10:00 am – 11:00 am with a memorial service beginning at 11:00 am in the Kirkhoff Funeral Home, 206 N. Main Street, Bernville.

A burial will be held privately at a later date in the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Stanley’s name may be made to Zion Blue Mountain UCC, 6573 Old U.S. 22, Bernville, PA 19506.
