Wellington L. Burkert

November 14, 1922 — April 29, 2018

Wellington L. Burkert, age 95, passed away at the Lutheran Home in Topton on April 29, 2018. He was a resident at the Lutheran Home for 23 years.

Welly, as he was called, was born on Nov. 14, 1922 in Reading, Pennsylvania, the first son of Arthur W. and N. Belle (Lance) Burkert.

He graduated from Reading High School in 1940 and after WWII was employed at the Reading Post Office for 30 years retiring in 1977.

During his early childhood the family did not own an automobile. Some of his earliest memories were of family hikes onto the slopes of Mt. Penn where he received an appreciation for nature. Later, when the family did own a car, or a machine as his father called it, they went for Sunday drives in the country.

He was a very caring person who assisted others throughout his life. If an older person needed transportation to go shopping, Welly was there to assist them. He was always genuinely concerned about others and placed their welfare, wants and needs before his own.

His family was paramount in his life and he loved to spend time with his eight nephews and niece and then their children and their children's children. Uncle Welly loved family gatherings and events.

Singing was a passion and he sang in church choirs at Grace Alsace UCC from 1947 - 1998 and after 1998 for Grace Congregation in Topton. He also enjoyed singing with relatives at family gatherings. Some of those family

Christmas singalongs in the 1970's and 80's would get quite loud. In more recent years he enjoyed quietly singing with one or two other relatives.

Welly is survived by a brother, Rodney W. Burkert. His other two brothers, Robert Burkert and Richard Burkert passed away in in 2004 and 1986 respectively.
