William J. Herbine, Jr., age 86, of Whitfield, passed away peacefully on January 24, 2026. He was the loving husband of Doris A. (Reed) Herbine. Bill and Doris were married June 15, 1963. They had a wonderful and happy life together with family and friends for 59 years. Doris passed away June 18, 2022. He was predeceased by his brother John Herbine and his wife Carol.

Born in Reading, he was the son of the late William J. Herbine and Mildred G. (Hafer) Herbine. Having been raised on River Road in Muhlenberg Township, he really enjoyed being a part of the annual picnics with those neighbors who currently live on River Road. Bill was proud of his heritage dating back to the Alsace-Lorraine region of Germany-France whose ancestors settled in Oley and Bern Townships, Berks County.

Bill graduated from Muhlenberg High School in 1957 having been a member of the Student Council, National Honor Society, school plays and choruses and lettered in three varsity sports (basketball, cross country and tennis) and in 1961 graduated from Albright College with a B.S. Degree in Economics/Accounting Major. At Albright, he was a member of the Kappa Upsilon Phi fraternity where he played intramural fraternity teams in football, basketball and softball.

In 1962, he enlisted in the Army and served three plus years in the Army Security Agency, 303rd ASA Battalion, stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington after his intelligence training at Ft. Holabird, MD. He served part of his three years as an Intelligence Analyst and later as Section Chief. He won his unit's Soldier of Year awards, received a special Letter of Commendation and was offered a direct commission as a Second Lieutenant. He also played football and basketball for his units’ 6th Army championship teams and was Honorably Discharged in 1965 in the rank of Specialist E-5 with a Distinguished Service Award and Good Conduct Award.

Following his service, he joined the Parish Division of Dana Corporation in Reading, Pa. as an accountant in 1967. He retired from Dana in 1999 after 32 years of service where he held the positions of Accounting Supervisor, Area Controller, Labor Relations Specialist, Plant Human Resource Manager and Division Director of Human Resources.

Being a member of and attending Good Shepherd UCC in Tuckerton, PA where he was baptized and confirmed was special for him where he was a member of the Boy Scouts, Sunday School teacher, Youth Advisor, Choir member, Church Council Treasurer and President and Treasurer of the Lay Life &Work Committee. He served as a Trustee of the Good Shepherd Cemetery since 1967 and currently was President. Bill also volunteered with Muhlenberg Township’s Food Pantry and Spring Township’s Park & Recreation Board.

He was a die-hard Wilson Bulldog, Phillies and Eagles fan. Bill was very active for much of his life. He loved playing fast pitch softball for the Blandon Softball team and helped build the softball field complex in Blandon, PA. The complex was donated by the softball team after their playing days to the Blandon community for recreational and other activities. He was an avid hunter and fisherman which he enjoyed as well as swimming, hiking, playing bridge for many years with friends and relaxing with them and family at the Locust Ridge Hunting Club in Clinton County of which he was a member since 1966 and was treasurer of the club for many years.

The loss of Bill will be felt by all those who crossed his path. But mostly, Bill will be missed by his three sons-Christopher (Sara); Timothy (Melissa); Andrew (Katie), and six grandchildren, Allison, Jack, Luke, Ella, Liam and Josie. The six grandchildren brought much joy into his life watching their sporting events, school events, church activities, birthday celebrations, graduations, artistic performances and many other accomplishments. He is also survived by his nephews, David, Greg, Jeff and Kerry Herbine and their extended families.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Bill’s honor should be made to the GSUCC Memorial Trust Fund, 170 Tuckerton Road, Reading PA 19605.

Services will be held at Good Shepherd UCC, 170 Tuckerton Road, Reading, PA on Friday February 13, 2026. Visitation begins 12pm with Memorial Service 1-2pm, and reception immediately following the service. The Milkins Trymbiski Funeral Home is entrusted with the funeral arrangements.
