Obituary

Doris Ann (Reed) Herbine

Doris Ann (Reed) Herbine of Whitfield passed away peacefully on June 18, 2022 at the age of 81.  She was the loving wife of William J. Herbine, Jr. for 59 years. Bill and Doris were married June 15, 1963.

She graduated 4th in her class from Muhlenberg High School and graduated from Juniata College receiving a bachelor’s degree in home economics while also serving as Vice President of Tau Epsilon Sigman honor service club.  She also did graduate work at Penn State University. Following her mother Mary’s lead, education was so important to Doris.  She loved teaching, especially at Reading High School, night classes at Reading Area Community College and Lakewood High School in the Tacoma, Washington area while her husband completed his tour of duty in the Army. Upon returning to Berks County and after her children started school, she continued to substitute at Reading High, Muhlenberg High and Wilson High schools.

She is survived by three sons and their wives who were most important to her during her lifetime – Christopher (Sara); Timothy, (Melissa); and Andrew (Katie).

Doris was very much involved in her children’s lives, serving as homeroom mother, soccer mom, Cub Scout Den Mother and President of the Wilson’s Football Mothers Organization. Doris loved attending the boys’ sports activities and other school events.

The six grandchildren – Allison, Jack and Luke (Chris & Sara); Ella (Tim & Missy); Liam & Josie (Andy and Katie) brought so much joy into her life with sporting events, church, birthdays and other school events and activities.

Attending and volunteering at her church, Good Shepherd UCC was special for Doris. She was a Sunday and Bible school teacher, Youth Fellowship advisor, dedicated crafter for the church’s bazaars and volunteered at the Muhlenberg Township Church’s Food Pantry and served meals at Opportunity House with a team for many years.

As an active member and president of the Muhlenberg Junior Women’s Club she was busy working on projects that benefited the community. Her efforts with this organization were instrumental in bringing Meals on Wheels to Muhlenberg Township. Doris also used her sewing skills to make vests, belts and restraints for Easter Seals to support the wonderful children there. She also served as a Judge of Elections in Spring Township for 30 plus years.

Doris was an avid reader and flew through novels with a passion. She enjoyed swimming, hiking, reading, playing bridge and other games and relaxing with her family and friends, plus visits to the Locust Ridge Lodge with family and friends.
