Joseph H. "Joe" Smith

July 22, 1944 — April 17, 2021

Centre Township

Joseph H. “Joe” Smith, 76, of Centre Township, passed away Saturday in Tower Health-Reading Hospital.

Joe was married to Margaret M. (Oxenreider) Smith, on October 3rd they would have been married for fifty one years.

Born in Lebanon, he was the son of the late Herman and Hilda (Schott) Smith.

Joe served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War earning two Bronze Stars. He was a member of the Sinking Spring VFW.

Joe started his working career at Hill Manufacturing in Shoemakersville for several years he later was employed by the Reading Railroad.

Most recently Joe retired from Carpenter Technologies where he was employed for twenty nine years.

He was formerly a member for several years at Salem Belleman’s United Church of Christ.

He was presently a member of St. Thomas Church in Bernville.

Joe enjoyed the outdoors, he enjoyed shooting, hunting, and fishing.

He was a life member of the NRA, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation Blue Mountain Chapter, Shartlesville Fish & Game, and the Perry Twp. Game Assoc.

He enjoyed woodworking and attending car shows.

Most of all Joe loved his family, his grandchildren were the highlight of his life.

Surviving along with his loving wife, Margaret is a son, Joseph A. “Joe” Smith and wife Kimberly A. Smith of Mohrsville.

Joe has two loving grandchildren, Kylie and Aidan Smith.

There are two sisters, Susan Kline and Joanne Nye.

Also, half-brothers, Brian and Thomas Smith and a half-sister, Diane Conrad.

He is predeceased by a brother, Herman Smith, a sister, Shirley Wells, and a step mother Nina Smith.

A viewing will be held on Sunday, April 25th from 5 pm until 7 pm in the Kirkhoff Funeral Home, 206 N. Main St., Bernville.

A funeral service will be held on Monday morning April 26th in the Kirkhoff Funeral Home at 10 am with a viewing one hour prior.

Face masks will be required and social distancing is recommended.

Interment with military honors will take place in Fairview Cemetery (Belleman’s)  of Centre Twp.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Lebanon VA and the Chemotherapy and Radiology Departments at the McGlinn Family Regional Cancer Center at Tower Health-Reading Hospital.

Flowers are welcome, or  monetary donations may be made to the "Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation". Note "In Memory of Joseph H. Smith" on the check.
